Teacup Pigs and Why You Should Get One

Teacup Pigs as Pets

Having a teacup pig around can be one of the most fulfilling experiences because these pets are a very unique companion to have around, even though it involves a lot of commitment and devotion. Most people who think of getting a teacup pig would probably be better of to consider having a dog, a cat or even a bird instead of a darling teacup pig.

teacup pig pets

We are not talking about regular pigs of normal size. We are actually talking about teacup pigs… pigs that may initially fit inside your favorite cup! These cute miniature pigs weigh no more than 9 ounces at birth on average but keep in mind these darling pets can grow! These teacup pigs could reach 30 to 60 pounds as a maximum weight. These small pigs are usually referred to as teacup pigs because of their size and they look amazingly cute on a teacup saucer.

pet teacup pig

Having a teacup pig around is a wonderful idea, not only because of how adorable they look but also because they are very smart animals and learn things quicker than other pets. Teacup pigs come in different colors and they are very peaceful creatures who enjoy running around your house.

caring for teacup pigs

Mini pigs love putting their noses in anything that comes in their way, which means you have to be extra careful because they can easily hurt themselves if you don’t properly prepare your house for these extra small animals who will not stop playing around. The below list will give you a clearer idea of why you should get a teacup pig.

Teacup Pigs Live a Long Time

Teacup pigs can be wonderful companions to have around, especially since they have a surprisingly long lifespan. Your teacup pig has a life expectancy that is between 20 to 25 years. For such a small creature, this is a very long life!

Teacup Pigs Don’t Make Lots of Noise

One common drawback about having a teacup pig around the house is the constant noises they make, whether they are grunting and snorting or trying to bark like dogs. Teacup pigs will probably not disturb you or your neighbors in that sense though, because they are so small, they simply don’t make very loud noises.

The Teacup Pig is Remarkably Smart

Pigs are known for their intelligence and they are believed to be smarter than domestic dogs and other animals. Your teacup pig will prove this animal has a higher level of intelligence than other animals. As a pet pig owner, you can easily teach your little teacup baby to use a litter box and to do a lot of tricks.

Pigs Are Very Affectionate House Pets

It might be due to their miniature size but teacup pigs require a lot of affection and love, and they will give this attention back in the cutest ways. A teacup pig will sit in your lap or sleep in the palm of your hand whenever they get a chance, and you will find them always running after you around the house.

These Small Pigs Won’t Get You Sick

Teacup pigs are not like other pets as they will likely not cause you any type of allergy issues.Theses little sweethearts are very safe and harmless around the home, and are not dangerous around small children. It is highly likely that everyone who enters your home will be able to love on your pet pig without incident.

 Teacup Pigs are Lovable

If you don’t mind slightly altering your life routine to include the smallest and cutest pet in the world, teacup pigs are perfect for you.

Miniature Pigs as Pets

Don’t Buy a Miniature Pig Yet

If you are a pet owner or pet lover, you know how amazing it feels to have such wonderful companions around. Unlike some human beings, miniature pigs as pets genuinely care for you and will do their best to please you. However, having a pet is not devoid of some significant drawbacks such as the time and effort it takes to train your pig. Over time, you will spend a lot of energy on your pig in an effort to get him used to your life style, and to teach them basic hygiene rules.

miniature Pigs as Pets

Of course, some pets require more attention than others but there are a few animals that really need your full attention and require a great degree of commitment and care …such as miniature pigs! Miniature pigs as pets can be the cutest and most adorable creatures on earth, and unlike other tiny pets, they live up to 25 years and are extremely intelligent. But….

mini pigs as pets

Despite these obvious and unavoidable facts, raising a miniature pig as a pet is not an easy thing to do. The entire process of training miniature pigs as pets is very different from raising other animals. These are the some of the things you should take into consideration before deciding to take a micro pig as your indoor pet.

Miniature Pigs Are Very Curious

These tiny cute creatures can cause you a lot of trouble due to their size and extreme curiosity. They will be running around the house all the time and will want to look inside anything open and interesting. These extra small pets can easily become injured due to their curiosity levels. You will have to keep everything that might hurt them out of their reach and make the necessary accommodations around your place for this very purpose.

Miniature Pigs Can Become Aggressive

All pigs are relatively well-known for their behavioral issues as these animals tend to get aggressive when they are hungry or not well at ease. This same attitude also applies to miniature pigs as well so you might want to be extra careful when taking a pet pig due to their sometimes ornery behavior.

Miniature Pigs Need Much Emotional Attention

Miniature pigs can become great pets but they need a lot of love and care on your part. These small and lovable creatures will want you to be around often in order to pet them and play with them which may not be convenient for most people. If you do not spend too much time away from home, miniature pigs might be the perfect pet but if you work or travel often, these attention-loving animals may not be for you.

Miniature Pigs Not Always Good With Other Pets

If you are a dog or cat owner and are currently thinking of taking a miniature pig as a pet, you will need to think again because these tiny animals don’t always get along with dogs and cats. Many times, miniature pigs will treat your other housepet as a rival even if you manage to separate the two in terms of space.

Miniature Pigs Can Vary in Growth

Certain breeds of miniature pigs will not remain as small as when you first adopted them and can reach the size of a regular pig. You might want to read more about miniature pigs and learn to recognize the types available where you live if you don’t want a big pig running through your house.

pigs as housepets

If you are okay with everything that has been mentioned in the above list and are still thinking of getting a miniature pig, good luck to you on your journey! Miniature pigs can often be too cute to resist …even though you have been properly warned. If you have adopted a pig baby, please share pics in the comments below.

We hope you are enjoying your new companion!

Recipe Alert! Bacon Mushroom Ragu Pasta

Written by Lillian Tram on June 16th, 2015

Whoa! Check out this Bacon Mushroom Ragu Pasta Recipe!

Bacon Mushroom Ragu Sauce Recipe

Yield: 8

Prep time: 15 minutes

Cook time: 30 minutes

Total time: 45 minutes

Cooking Italian with Delicious Bacon

If you want something that is easy and fairly quick to make with excellent yumminess, this Bacon Mushroom Ragu is it, seriously. I was a bit apprehensive about what the kids would say about the mushrooms, they’re not fans of the fungus family…yet, though I am determined to develop an appreciation for them in the kids. The original recipe I found calls for a pound of ground turkey, and you can certainly use that as opposed to the lesser amount of Italian sausage, but I mean it’s Italian sausage.

To soothe over the possible apocalypse of mushrooms in their food, I made up a batch of my roasted garlic no-knead bread the night before. It must have worked because not only did they not shoot me with their dagger eyes, they said, “Mom, this is the bomb!” Whew! As those of you with teens will know, there is apparently no higher praise than “being the bomb”. Enough talking, make this, eat this, and fantasize about making it again; I know I am.

INGREDIENTS:

2 tbsp. oil
8-10 strips of bacon, chopped in small pieces
1/2 lb. cremini mushrooms, chopped
3 tbsp. fresh thyme, finely chopped (keep 1 tbsp. for garnish)
½ lb of Italian sausage (I used the hot links, they were fantastic)
1 large sweet onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, pressed
Salt and pepper
1 6 oz. can tomato paste
2 cups stock
1 lb. penne ziti pasta
2 tbsp. butter, melted
Freshly grated Parmesan Cheese

DIRECTIONS:

onion and baconIn a large skillet, heat the oil and add the bacon, cooking until the fat melts, about 3 minutes.

Add the mushrooms and 2 tbsp. of thyme, stirring until the mushrooms are brown, about 5 more minutes.

Add the onion and cook another 5 minutes.

Adding Mushrooms and Bacon

Lastly, add the ground turkey to the skillet with garlic, breaking the meat into tiny pieces as it cooks.

Cook for about 5 minutes until the meat is done.

cooking with bacon

Add the tomato paste and stir for about 1 minute.

Stir in the stock and bring to a boil; simmer on low while the pasta cooks.

bacon yum!

Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to package directions, minus 1-2 minutes, cooking it al dente.

Drain and place the pasta in a large bowl, adding the melted butter.

Bacon deliciousness

Pour the bacon and mushroom ragu sauce over the pasta.

Sprinkle with cheese and fresh thyme; serve.

Yummy Watermelons and Watermelon Pigs

Written by Lillian Tram on June 8th, 2015

Watermelons! They’re so good to eat! Have you ever wondered just how many watermelons are  being consumed each year? Me too …but I couldn’t find an answer. However, I did find out that an average American eats almost 16 pounds of watermelon each year, according to statistics.

Watermelon always tastes great but some are clearly better than others. Have you wondered why? Obviously there are different types of watermelons available beyond the seeded and seedless options, but there are also some great tips you can follow to make sure you’re bringing home one of the tastiest in the produce section or farmer’s market.

How to choose a watermelon

How to Choose a Yummy Watermelon

Yes! This is totally important. Here are some of the best characteristics to look for in a watermelon to ensure you and your crew have a tasty and healthy summer snack. Check out these watermelon buying tips and let us know if you have used these methods to choose your watermelons in the past.

#1 – You don’t want a picture perfect watermelon, such as the one above. The truth is, that shiny appearance on the outside of your  watermelon means it’s under ripe on the inside. Choose an already developed dull-looking watermelon.  The same rule applies to Honeydews …if you’re a fan.

How to Choose Your Watermelon

#2 – The side on which your watermelon sat while growing in the field is called the ‘field spot’ or ‘yellow spot’. If your watermelon’s field spot is not a nice creamy shade of yellow such as the one pictured here, keep looking.

#3 – If you love a watermelon that is amazingly sweet, you should remember that the darker this yellow spot is, the sweeter your melon will taste! A white field spot means your watermelon isn’t ripe and hasn’t had a chance to sweeten up yet.

#4 – You have probably seen people in the produce aisle, knocking on watermelons and other fruit and listening to the sound this makes. Are you wondering if there is anything to this old trick? Yes, prepare to join the masses who knock on their fruit in the grocery store because a “dull” thud indicates soft flesh and an under ripe fruit. When you knock on a watermelon, your knuckles should bounce off of the melon, meaning the rind should be hard and firm.

#5 – Don’t buy a watermelon without picking several of them up! You want to find the heaviest watermelon of the particular size you want. The heavier your watermelon, the more water your fruit contains. Note the difference: the heaviest does not necessarily mean the largest.

#6 – While you have that big guy in your arms, feel him up. It’s not like you aren’t already lusting after his tasty goodness anyway. Fell for lumps, bumps and knots to find areas of inconsistency which will mean your watermelon might have gotten inconsistent amounts of sun and water during the growth process which can affect its taste and quality.

Now that you’ve got the information needed to find the absolute best watermelon available in your area, here are some cute ways to incorporate those darling pigs we all love into your next family day, friendly gathering or celebration. All you need is a really sharp knife, a cutting board and a melon baller and you’re ready to create an edible masterpiece from your watermelon.

Watermelon Pig

Expect many compliments and enjoy the faces of children when they first see this amazing carved fruit display. Here are some other variations to consider when creating a festive watermelon pig for your special day.

Watermelon Pig DisplayI would suggest using fruit that you can find in season to save money while making a watermelon pig. As you can see in the next photograph (right), you can opt to serve only its own fruit in your watermelon carving.

Some of the more popular fruit additions that hold up well include pineapple chunks, honeydew, cantaloupe, strawberries, mandarin orange slices, kiwis and seedless grapes. Some people add bananas but I would recommend waiting until the last minute to add these slices to the display to prevent browning, or ripening.

While you are working on the watermelon, be sure to refrigerate all of your fruit until time for assembly into the fruit display. Below is a quick syrup that you can make to coat your fruit and keep everything looking and tasting wonderful.

Natural Syrup Recipe for Watermelon Fruit

You will need a small saucepan, one-quarter cup of white granulated sugar, one-half cup of water and two tablespoons of fresh grated lemon zest.

Place the saucepan on the stove over medium-high heat, bringing the water and sugar to a boil. Once boiling, all of the sugar should be dissolved.

Remove the saucepan from heat and continue to stir until you cannot see any of the sugar granules.

Add the fresh lemon zest and set the mixture aside to cool.

Place all of your fruit bites in a large mixing bowl and pour this syrup over, tossing the fruit around to completely coat every bite. For best results, keep the bowl of fruit and the carved watermelon in the refrigerator until time to fill and serve your watermelon pig display.
