Atlanta BBQ Festival at Atlantic Station!

Written by Lillian Tram on September 19th, 2013

We pigged out on pork rinds, juicy BBQ, and listened to live music at the Atlanta Bar-B-Q Festival. The admission tickets were only $10 for two people if you bought the deal on Groupon. If you didn’t get a chance to go, there’s always next year. Oink oink!

Pigs Too Big To Be Pets In Florida?

Written by Lillian Tram on September 10th, 2013

Down in Florida right now, a city council is considering an amendment that involves figuring out pig weights, and determining whether people can keep pigs as pets. Among other issues, the proposed law is re-considering whether people can have pigs as pets if they weigh over a certain weight, and if they meet other requirements.

You can read about it here, but basically, a big hubbub has come out of some people holding pigs as pets, paying their annual domestic licensures, and other people seeing people not as pets, but as farm animals. That’s not new, of course, and these sorts of issues periodically pop up in various other states around laws when people question whether pigs are even allowed to be pets.

Georgia’s pigs as pets rule is a little bit difficult to decipher (read all about it in its original format here), but it appears that you are allowed to have “livestock,” including swine, so long as they have proper vaccinations and veterinary permits attached and required, as released and approved by the State Veterinarian.

Pig Squealing Contest

Written by Lillian Tram on August 23rd, 2013

There are all kinds of strange contests being held all over the world. Some of them can be pretty outrageous like the smelliest shoes or the longest spit, the loudest burp and quite a few other strange ideas, so it only makes sense that there would be a pig squealing contest too.

Every year a bunch of people in France meet up and get dressed in pig costumes in order to get into character. Their performance is not only based on their squealing abilities, but also on how well they can imitate every single thing that pigs normally do. Including how they eat, how they roll and how they interact with each other. There are many who dress up in very funny ways and even kids have participated in the squealing and the entire event is very family oriented. Some of these people travel from all over France just to make it to the festival.

Honey Boo Boo Has Her Own… Pig?

Written by Lillian Tram on August 21st, 2013

If you’ve been living under a rock for the better part of the last few months, you’ve missed the cultural train wreck – er, phenomenon – that is Honey Boo Boo Child.

That’s right. The little girl from Toddlers in Tiaras who was born and raised in small town, down-home Georgia has been given her own spin-off show and lives it up doing all sorts of redneck stuff around the city.

Truth be told, the girl has a pretty funny personality, and she doesn’t seem as dumb as the cameras make her out to be, but you definitely get the feeling that you are watching complete trailer trash when you enjoy that show.

What’s more, it feels to me like I am losing some brain cells when it comes to watching her on television, too, since she surely isn’t stimulating any sort of conversation or interaction with me!

Plumping Pigs with Pot Plants

Written by Lillian Tram on July 20th, 2013

Recent news has shocked the world of pork lovers, as well as the members and fans of MyPigMeUp.com, regarding a new trend in pig feeding. According to Eatocracy.cnn.com a local longtime vendor at Seattle’s Pike Place market known as Bucking Boars Ranch has started to sell meat from pigs that have been plumped with marijuana plants.

The explanation coming from Bucking Boars Ranch explained that since pot is legal in Washington State, medicinal marijuana farmers don’t know what to do with the parts of marijuana that aren’t good for pot. Hence, the pork purveyor has come up with the idea to start feeding their hogs on pot: “It turns out that all those useless stems, root bulbs and oversized leaves are great feed for pigs”.

Love, Marriage And… Bacon!?

Written by Lillian Tram on July 3rd, 2013

I have heard of many interesting ideas for wedding themes, but the latest one has blown my mind. It is original, funny, cute and it really shows love-mostly love for bacon. That’s right, newest inspiration for your wedding comes straight from San Diego where couple got married and celebrated their love for each other and for bacon as well.

The wedding had it all. The carpet on the wedding was done in bacon print which honestly looks amazing. You know that tradition to throw rice on the bride and groom? Well; it has changed, at least for the bacon themed weddings, because people were throwing bacon bits. Cake was inspired by bacon as well. Instead of the colorful sprinkles on top of the cake, there was… Guess what? That’s right, bacon sprinkles.

National Lampoon’s Pig Poke

Written by Lillian Tram on June 27th, 2013

You guys remember National Lampoon’s European Vacation? You know the one – the familiar clan is back and they are taking a trip, but this time, they head out all over Europe? It was made in 1985 (which makes me feel so old!) but it is still hilarious today!

One of the things that they do – and after all, the reason why I’m bringing it up today on the blog – is that they compete in a game show during the movie called Pig in a Poke. Basically, the entire family dresses up in pig costumes to play this game show within the movie itself.
And since it’s Chevy Chase in the 1980s, before he got un-funny, as you can imagine it is pretty funny and enjoyable to watch!

Here’s a clip of the game itself in the movie, as you can see the kids aren’t too excited about dressing up as pigs – and nobody in the family seems to know anything about geography, or Hungarian cabinet-making!

As you might expect, the game goes pretty badly for the family as they go through Europe in this comedy of errors. And the pig suits… well, that just was what people considered stylish back in the 1980s, I guess!

A Disabled Pig Who Gets By With A Little Help!

Written by Lillian Tram on March 6th, 2013

Meet Chris P. Bacon, the coolest little disabled pig on the block. See, Mr. Bacon was born without the use of his hind legs, so he was given this genius little contraption to get him around and moving again, and get him going on his way with a little wheelchair cart to explore the world!

The pig’s previous owners had taken him to the veterinarian in Florida to put him down, since they just kind of assumed that there wouldn’t be anything they could do and there was no way to allow the pig to live a positive, healthy quality of life with only his two front legs.

How’s Your Hog Doing?

Written by Lillian Tram on February 23rd, 2013

I’m no biker, but bikes are badass. Or, I guess I should say, hogs are bad ass – since that’s what bikers, and specifically Harley Davidson riders, call their bikes. There’s an owner’s group out there now called the Harley Owner’s Group (get it? HOG?), but even before that, I wondered why Harleys were called hogs. So, I looked it up!

It turns out that down south back in the 1920s and for several decades, Harley Davidson teams of racers had mascots to cheer them along, and one (or maybe more?) of the successful teams had hog and pig mascots. They figured that the bikes and the hogs both had a workman-like, endearing quality to them, and they forever became linked. The racing teams called themselves the hogs as an homage to their hog mascot, and they considered themselves to be linked from it.

Pig Out Because You’re Poor?

Written by Lillian Tram on February 12th, 2013

Ok, maybe not because you are poor, per se, but NPR has a fascinating new article up recently about how evolutionary biologists have determined that people are more likely to pig out – i.e., gain weight – over time during two major periods: recessions, and winter time.

It makes sense when you think about it (and you can read more about it here on NPR’s website), but basically, it all comes down to scarcity. When food and other resources are scarcer, or at the very least when they are perceived to be scarcer, they come up more likely that you will use them to ensure that you survive.

Bracing For Antibiotic Resistance

Written by Lillian Tram on February 8th, 2013

Big news on the farm around the country is the issues with antibiotic usage – and now resistance to antibiotics by diseases – by pig farmers all around the country. While pig farmers have been feeding antibiotics to their pigs for years now, just in the last few years the United States and the FDA have come down with some pretty stringent guidelines on antibiotics in animals and for animal food.

Antibiotics, after all, make the pigs ward off disease when they are young and vulnerable, and allow farmers to see to it that they have a clean crop each year and a good set of pigs from which to choose. Plus, antibiotics help the older pigs grow faster on less feed, accounting for more profits and a better profit margin than what had been previously used decades before.

What’s Up With Cochon 555 This Year?

Written by Lillian Tram on February 4th, 2013

If you’ve been living under a rock, or you’re not as big a fan of pigs as I am (ha!), you may not know about Cochon 555, a kind of new foodie rock & roll paradise that is dedicated to being a traveling circus of sorts. It prides itself on sustainability, and being a “locavore” event for people who love eating, spending, and shopping locally, as well as a cooking contest and a wine tasting event for those who just love food and drink.

Oh, yeah. And the pigs.

The Best Bacon Bouquet You Can Make

Written by Lillian Tram on February 2nd, 2013

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, believe it or not, but don’t worry, fellas! If you’ve got a girlfriend (and if she’s anything like me!), chances are she wants two things for the special day: a set of nice, beautiful roses, and something tasty to eat. Well… what if I told you that there was a way that you could give her both of those things at once? And no, I’m not talking about having her eat the roses, silly…

I’m of course talking about a BACON BOUQUET! That’s right – a bouquet of what looks like roses, but instead of being actual flowers and plants, well, it’s bacon! What’s not to love about that?

It’s All Over For The Hogettes

Written by Lillian Tram on January 28th, 2013

When it comes to famous mascots and amazing crowd support and fandom, few sports can match the intensity of the National Football League. After all, you had Barrel Man in Denver, the famous firefighter who rooted on the New York Jets loyally, and countless other supporters and fans across the country pushing their teams to victory week in, and week out.

But few fans really came up with as original and, ahem, as unforgettable work in their support as those of the Washington Redskins. I’m of course talking about The Hogettes, a group of middle-aged men who liked to dress up as women, in flowery, colorful dresses, with pig snouts on their noses. They loyally cheered at each and every Redskins home game, and even their fair share of road games over time on their way to being, well, unforgettable in the minds of most Redskins fans.
