Hospital Gets Clever With A Piggy Mascot…Who Then Gets Arrested?!Written by Lillian Tram on October 28th, 2013
No, this title is not a misprint, folks. Johnston Memorial Hospital found an interesting way last year to make their fundraisers a bit more fun, and they did it with a man dressed up as a pig mascot… who then got arrested. While the arrest was kind of a joke, the fundraiser was not, as they hospital raised more than $33,000 with the mascot’s help to benefit their Mountain States Foundation and improve care for people in and around the hospital.
Plus, overall, the campaign raised a whopping $209,000 – not only their most successful campaign to date, but something that proves that pigs can really bring in the bacon and fry it in the pan! Ok, bad pun. Sorry.
The pig worked with staff members at the hospital, as well as with patients and visitors, and apparently improved morale so much that he (or she?) helped raise a ton of money. Events include the pig’s tale that he called “The Gift of Pignochio,” which he used to dream of someday becoming a real pig, as well as interacting with kids in the hospital, brightening their day, and telling their story.
The hospital even held a contest to name the pig himself, with two winners receiving Wal-Mart gift cards for coming up with the winning name “Starr,” truly fitting for this pig who went above and beyond to help those in and around the hospital, and raise money for much-needed services around the hospital and the medical community in the area more generally.
So what is it about pig mascots and people dressed up as pigs? We see it happen quite a bit, and it always seems to go over well – could it be that more people are like me, and realize just how awesome and fun-loving pigs are, and how important it is to get piggy with it? Ok, that’s two bad puns in one post. I can’t help it…
Anyways, this proves that it doesn’t have to be Halloween for you to go and dress up like a pig any more, and it certainly can be for more than just a party. Dressing up as a pig can help out your family members and friends, too… you know, if you’re creative enough!
